If the Moon looks huge tonight, you are probably seeing the Moon illusion. When the Moon is low in the sky, it appears alongside familiar things—houses, trees, hills, cranes, skylines—and can feel vastly bigger than when it is high overhead.
The fast checklist
- Is it near the horizon?
- Very likely the Moon illusion. This is the usual culprit.
- Is it full or nearly full?
- That makes the effect more noticeable, but a low Moon can look large at other phases too.
- Is it being called a supermoon?
- It may be slightly closer than average, but the dramatic part is still often perceptual.
- Is it orange or red?
- That colour comes from looking through more atmosphere. Colour and apparent size are separate effects.
Could it really be closer?
The Moon travels in an ellipse rather than a perfect circle, so its distance from Earth changes. A full Moon near its closest approach is commonly called a supermoon. That is a real orbital difference, but it is modest to the unaided eye compared with the horizon effect.
A useful rule: if it looks comically enormous while it is sitting behind buildings or trees, the Moon illusion is doing most of the dramatic work. If it is also a supermoon, the two effects can happen together—one physical, one perceptual, both excellent for photos.
Why does my phone make it look tiny?
A phone’s normal camera is wide-angle. It captures a huge patch of sky, so the Moon’s roughly half-degree disc occupies only a small part of the photo. Your eyes are also reading the entire scene and its context, which is why the view can feel bigger than the screenshot. A longer lens narrows the frame; it does not make the Moon physically bigger.
