The short answer

Your brain did it.

Near the horizon, the Moon often looks dramatically larger than it does high in an empty sky. The measured change is usually tiny. The perceived change can be enormous.

This is the Moon illusion. Buildings, trees, hills, rooftops, and the geometry of a familiar horizon supply distance and scale cues. Your visual system uses those cues to interpret what it sees—and apparently feels very strongly about the result.

We know the effect is real and extremely well documented, but exactly how the visual system produces it is more complicated than one simple trick. There is still no complete scientific consensus.

The Moon spans only about half a degree of sky. A wide phone lens captures an enormous field of view, so the Moon gets very few pixels to express itself. Telephoto lenses narrow the frame. They do not inflate the Moon; they crop the universe.

A genuinely changing variable

The orbit is not a perfect circle.

The Moon’s distance varies roughly from 356,000 km at especially close perigees to about 406,000–407,000 km at distant apogees. So its measured angular diameter really does change.

Scientific terminology successfully making “near bit” and “far bit” sound expensive.

Fine print from physics

Okay, sometimes it actually is bigger.

“Supermoon” is an informal label, usually meaning a full Moon relatively near perigee. A near-perigee full Moon can appear up to about 14% wider than a comparable far-away full Moon near apogee.

Real difference: yes. “Someone replaced the Moon with Jupiter”: no.

Is the atmosphere magnifying it?

Nope.

The atmosphere is not acting like a giant magnifying glass. Refraction near the horizon can bend the Moon’s light unevenly and compress it vertically, producing a slightly squashed disc—not a vastly enlarged one.

The atmosphere is involved in many things. This particular crime is mostly not its fault.

Would you like to look stupid for science?

Try looking at a horizon Moon upside down, between your legs, or through a tube. For many people, disrupting familiar scene geometry reduces the illusion. It does not work identically for everyone.

Please establish that you are not standing next to traffic before conducting lunar research upside down.

The really weird part

Knowing this doesn’t fix it.

Understanding an illusion does not switch it off. Perception is an active interpretation, not a raw feed your conscious mind can patch with one strongly worded memo.

Yes. The Moon illusion is not a private hallucination. People in the same place receive broadly similar horizon cues, landscape context, depth information, and framing. Multiple observers can independently report the same enormous-looking Moon.

Why this is even possible

Vision is not a camera.

Your brain continually interprets distance, scale, depth, context, lighting, motion, and perspective. That reconstruction is normally astonishingly useful. Occasionally it also looks at an ordinary Moon and submits an emergency report.

Your brain isn’t watching reality through a GoPro. It’s running a live reconstruction with extremely confident autocomplete.

Make a small tube with your hand or use cardboard. Isolate the real Moon from the landscape. For many people, the perceived bigness changes.

Why does the Moon look huge tonight?

Usually because you’re seeing it near the horizon and experiencing the Moon illusion. Its real angular diameter changes somewhat with orbital distance, but not enough to explain a truly ludicrous-looking horizon Moon.

Is the Moon actually closer tonight?

It may be somewhat closer, depending on where it is in its elliptical orbit. But the Moon illusion can happen whether or not the Moon is especially near perigee.

Why does the Moon look bigger near the horizon?

It appears to involve how visual perception interprets distance, context, and scene geometry. Foreground objects and horizon cues may contribute, but there is still no single explanation that has won universal scientific agreement.

Why does the Moon look tiny in photos?

The Moon spans only about half a degree. A normal phone lens records a very wide field of view, so that half-degree disc occupies a tiny part of the frame. A telephoto lens narrows the frame around it.

Is this a supermoon?

Maybe, depending on the date and the Moon’s distance. But supermoons and the Moon illusion are separate phenomena. A supermoon is a full Moon near perigee; the illusion is perceptual.

Does the atmosphere magnify the Moon?

No. Atmospheric refraction does not create the dramatic enlargement. Near the horizon it can actually compress the Moon vertically and make it look slightly squashed.

Does everybody see the Moon illusion?

Not identically, but it is widely reported and well studied. Its strength varies with the observer and viewing conditions.

Can I make the illusion disappear?

Sometimes. Reducing horizon context—looking through a tube, covering the surroundings, or changing your viewing orientation—can weaken it for many observers.

Why does the Sun also sometimes look huge?

A similar horizon-size illusion can affect the Sun. Do not stare directly at it to test this. Your commitment to science is appreciated but unnecessary.
