The Moon illusion is the name for the familiar experience of a Moon near the horizon looking much bigger than the same Moon high in an open sky. It is a real perceptual effect, not a failure of your eyesight and not evidence of an unscheduled lunar approach.
Is the Moon actually bigger near the horizon?
Usually, no. The Moon’s angular width in the sky is roughly half a degree. Its orbital distance does change over time, but that subtle physical difference does not explain the dramatic good lord, look at it effect that can happen as it rises or sets.
In fact, when you view the Moon near the horizon you are looking across more of Earth than when it is overhead, so geometry does not provide a satisfying giant-Moon explanation. The thing that changes most is your perception of the scene.
Why does it look so much larger?
A horizon is full of scale and distance cues: trees, rooftops, hills, buildings, roads, clouds, and the general business of Earth. A high Moon has acres of empty sky around it. Your visual system uses context to estimate size and distance, and a low Moon is interpreted differently from an isolated one.
Scientists have studied this for centuries. Several perceptual explanations are plausible, but there is no one-line mechanism accepted as the complete account. That uncertainty is not a cop-out; it is the accurate answer.
How to test the Moon illusion yourself
- Look at a low Moon with the surrounding landscape visible.
- Cover the landscape with your hand or look through a short tube.
- Turn your phone sideways and compare the Moon’s width in a consistent frame.
- Later, compare it when the Moon is high in the sky.

What about a supermoon?
A supermoon is a full Moon that occurs near perigee, the closer part of the Moon’s elliptical orbit. That can make the Moon physically a little larger and brighter than average.
